What you get — and what changes

  • Dialogue text Kept

Dialogue rows became SRT cue text in the same order for the minimal ASS torture fixture.

  • Override blocks Lost

The {\an8} override was stripped when ASS dialogue text was parsed.

  • Line breaks Changed

ASS \N breaks became real SRT line breaks inside the cue body.

  • Timestamps Changed

Centisecond-style ASS times were padded to three-digit SRT milliseconds.

  • Style definitions Lost

Script Info, PlayRes values, V4+ Styles, margins, colors, and alignment are not represented in SRT.

  • Styled ASS timing Kept

The fixture with a V4+ Styles Format line kept its Events Dialogue timings after the parser fix.

ffmpeg -i in.ass out.srt

FFmpeg may preserve or normalize styled ASS constructs differently, so compare the cue text if overrides matter.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Keep ASS when karaoke effects, positioning, colors, or typesetting are part of the deliverable.
  • Use /convert/srt-to-ass only when moving the other direction from a simpler SRT source.
  • Do not use SRT when the receiving player needs ASS-specific layout or animation commands.

ASS subtitles to SubRip SRT questions

Does ASS to SRT preserve styling?

No. SRT has no fields for ASS styles, colors, PlayRes values, margins, or override positioning. Our subtitle engine strips override blocks from ASS text.

Does a V4+ Styles Format line shift timing?

No after the fix we retested. The parser now reads the Format line from the Events section, so the fixture kept its original Dialogue start and end times.

Are ASS line breaks kept?

Yes as plain SRT line breaks. The \N escape in the torture file became a real newline between caption lines.
