What you get — and what changes

  • Page count Kept

Each page becomes one PNG; multi-page PDFs download as a ZIP of page images.

  • Text layer Lost

Selectable PDF text is rendered into pixels and is no longer searchable in the PNG.

  • Transparency Kept

Use the transparent background option when the PDF page has transparent regions you need in the PNG.

  • White background option Changed

Choosing white composites transparent page regions, which is safer for viewers that display alpha as black.

  • Vector graphics Changed

SVG-like shapes and PDF vectors are fixed to the chosen DPI instead of remaining resolution independent.

  • File size Changed

PNG is lossless for the rendered pixels and is usually larger than JPG for scanned-photo PDFs.

Sample conversions

Logo sheet with transparent art

Input
A one-page PDF proof containing a logo over a transparent page area and small vector registration marks.
Output
One PNG at 150 DPI. Transparent mode kept the alpha outside the logo; the marks became fixed pixels.

Scanned magazine spread

Input
A two-page PDF made from full-color scanned pages with photos and dense text columns.
Output
A ZIP with two PNGs. The files were larger than equivalent JPGs, but text edges avoided JPEG ringing.

A real PDF → PNG run

We converted our PDF sample (21 KB) with Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 413 ms and produced a 74 KB PNG file, 3.5× larger than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Options and when to change them

dpi
Use 150 for normal previews and 300 when the PNG will be zoomed, cropped, or placed into a design file.
background
Choose transparent for overlays and white for screenshots, office documents, or systems that do not handle alpha well.

Do it yourself

Poppler pdftoppm

bash
pdftoppm -png -r 150 in.pdf page

pdftoppm writes one PNG per page and may not match image-ir background handling for transparent PDFs.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Use PDF → JPG for photo-only pages when small output files matter more than lossless edges.
  • Use a PDF text extraction or Deep Read workflow if the goal is searchable or editable text.
  • Keep vector PDF or export SVG when the artwork must scale without a fixed pixel resolution.

PDF to PNG questions

Does PDF → PNG keep transparency?

It can. Select the transparent background option when the PDF page really has alpha and the downstream tool supports transparent PNGs.

Why are the PNGs bigger than JPGs?

PNG stores the rendered page losslessly. That is good for text and flat graphics, but expensive for scanned photos.

Why are links missing from the PNG?

A PNG is a bitmap image, so PDF annotations, links, form fields, and bookmarks are not represented.

Will raising DPI make the PDF sharper?

It renders more pixels from the same page. Vector and text PDFs benefit; low-resolution scanned pages cannot recover detail that was not there.
