About PNG
PNG is a lossless raster image format designed for exact pixels, sharp edges, transparency, and broad web support. It works well for screenshots, logos, diagrams, UI mockups, icons, charts, and images that include text or flat color. Unlike JPEG, PNG does not throw away detail when saved, so repeated edits do not create compression artifacts. The tradeoff is file size: photographic images can become much larger as PNG than as JPEG, HEIC, or WebP. Conversion should match content type: keep PNG for crisp graphics and transparency, but avoid it as a default for large camera photos.
Variants matter. PNG-24 usually means truecolor RGB with optional 8-bit alpha, suitable for full-color images and smooth transparency. PNG-8 uses an indexed palette with up to 256 colors and can be dramatically smaller for icons or simple graphics, but gradients and photos may band. PNG supports full alpha transparency, gamma and color chunks, textual metadata, and interlacing. APNG extends PNG for animation; it is supported by modern browsers but not by every image pipeline. Some tools silently keep only the first APNG frame when converting to ordinary PNG, while others expand frames to GIF or WebP animation.
PNG is read and written by browsers, design tools, operating-system screenshot utilities, Figma exports, office suites, printers, documentation sites, game engines, and data visualization libraries. Producers differ in palette optimization, metadata, and color management. A screenshot utility may produce a large but clean PNG. A design export may include transparent padding. A charting library may write a PNG with exact pixel labels but no accessible data behind it. Optimizers can reduce file size by removing chunks and improving compression without changing pixels, but aggressive palette conversion can change appearance.
Conversion gotchas usually involve choosing the wrong target. PNG to JPG loses transparency and may add artifacts around text. PNG to WebP can be lossless or lossy; choose lossless for UI assets and lossy for photo-like images. PNG to PDF embeds fixed-size raster art, so resolution and DPI affect print sharpness. PNG to SVG does not magically recreate vectors; it either embeds a raster image or requires tracing, which is approximate. When exporting from PNG, inspect alpha edges, color shifts, and dimensions. When importing to PNG, decide whether metadata should be preserved, whether APNG animation matters, and whether indexed color is acceptable.
Use PNG deliberately in production asset pipelines. For app icons, logos, and screenshots, it gives predictable pixels and easy QA. For responsive websites, large PNG photos waste bandwidth and should become JPEG, WebP, or AVIF derivatives. For print, pixels per inch only matter together with dimensions; a 1200-pixel image can be crisp in a small logo and soft as a full-page graphic. For accessibility and search, remember that text inside a PNG is just pixels unless OCR or the surrounding page provides alt text. Keep vector or layered design sources when later editing is expected, and use PNG as an exported asset with documented size and alpha requirements. Test the asset on light and dark backgrounds before flattening.

Common PNG problems
A PNG is much larger than expected.
Use palette optimization for simple graphics or convert photo-like content to JPEG/WebP.
Animation disappears.
Check for APNG and convert to animated WebP or GIF instead of a single PNG.
Transparent edges show halos after conversion.
Flatten against the final background color or use a target with alpha support.
A PNG logo converted to SVG is not editable vectors.
Use the original vector source or a tracing tool, then review the paths manually.
