About EPUB
EPUB is the standard open ebook package used for reflowable books, documentation, manuals, and many digital publications. Technically it is a zipped archive containing XHTML or HTML content, CSS, images, fonts, metadata, a spine that defines reading order, and navigation files. Its strength is adaptability: readers can change font size, margins, theme, and screen size while the book reflows. That is the opposite of PDF, which fixes pages. Converting EPUB well means respecting the reading order and accepting that exact line breaks, page numbers, and device rendering are not inherent to the source.
EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 differ in ways that matter. EPUB 2 relies on older XHTML, NCX table-of-contents files, and simpler semantics. EPUB 3 adds HTML5, richer navigation documents, accessibility metadata, media overlays, better language support, MathML/SVG possibilities, and fixed-layout profiles. Not every reader supports every EPUB 3 feature. Fixed-layout EPUBs behave more like designed pages and can degrade when converted to reflowable formats. DRM is a hard boundary: Adobe, Apple, Kobo, and other protected EPUBs cannot be converted by ordinary tools and should fail clearly rather than pretending content is missing.
EPUB is read and written by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Thorium, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Pandoc, publishing platforms, documentation generators, and library systems. Kindle workflows are more complicated. Amazon Send-to-Kindle accepts EPUB uploads, but Kindle devices do not store EPUB natively; Amazon converts server-side. MOBI is legacy, and AZW3/KF8 handles newer Kindle features. A publishing workflow may require clean metadata, cover declarations, language tags, and validated navigation, while a personal archive may only need readable chapters.
Conversion gotchas are mostly about layout, CSS, and rights. EPUB to PDF creates fixed pages from reflowable content, so page count depends on paper size, margins, and font size. EPUB to MOBI loses modern CSS and EPUB 3 features. EPUB to Markdown extracts text structure but drops reader behavior, cover packaging, and many visual details. EPUB to DOCX can help editing but may turn chapters into one long document. Always test chapter navigation, cover display, images, footnotes, and special characters. If DRM is present, stop there. If the goal is Kindle reading, try Send-to-Kindle with the original EPUB before making a legacy MOBI.
Good EPUB conversion begins with validation. Check that the package has a complete manifest, a correct spine, declared language, usable navigation, and a marked cover. Broken internal links, missing images, invalid XHTML, or malformed CSS often appear only after conversion because tolerant readers hide them. For publishing, run an EPUB validator before and after edits. For archives, keep original metadata and identifiers. For accessibility, preserve headings, alt text, landmarks, and reading order where the target supports them. For classroom or review copies, PDF can be convenient, but it gives up the very reflow behavior that makes EPUB comfortable to read on small screens and accessible devices. Keep both when distribution and print review differ, especially when instructors cite page numbers or bookstores validate uploads and libraries preserve catalog metadata accurately and consistently.

Common EPUB problems
An EPUB fails conversion even though it opens in a store app.
Check for DRM. Protected EPUBs cannot be converted without store authorization.
The PDF output has unexpected page breaks.
Adjust page size, margins, and base font; reflowable EPUB has no fixed pages.
The cover does not show in a reader.
Set proper cover metadata and ensure the cover image is referenced in the package.
EPUB 3 features vanish in MOBI.
Use EPUB or AZW3 when modern layout matters; MOBI is a legacy target.
