About Word DOCX
DOCX is the modern Microsoft Word document format, packaged as zipped Office Open XML files containing document XML, styles, relationships, media, numbering, comments, headers, footers, and metadata. It is an editable authoring format, not just a display format. Good DOCX files use semantic styles: real headings, list definitions, paragraph styles, table structures, captions, and alt text. Poor DOCX files often simulate structure with font size, tabs, manual spacing, text boxes, and pasted HTML. Conversion quality depends less on what the page looks like and more on whether the document model describes the content clearly.
Variants matter. DOCX is macro-free; DOCM is the macro-enabled equivalent and should be treated carefully because macros are executable code in Word, even though most converters ignore or strip them. Older DOC files are binary and usually need LibreOffice or Word automation to read reliably. DOTX and DOTM are templates rather than ordinary documents. Word also stores compatibility settings from older versions, tracked changes, comments, fields, SmartArt, equations, embedded charts, and OLE objects. Some of those can be rendered to PDF but not represented in Markdown, plain text, or simple HTML.
DOCX is read and written by Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs exports, Pages, OnlyOffice, legal drafting tools, CMS pipelines, contract systems, and many reporting libraries. Those systems disagree on layout details such as page breaks, fonts, section margins, list indentation, and floating objects. A DOCX from Word with embedded fonts may export cleanly to PDF. A DOCX generated by a template engine may have correct text but odd styles. A DOCX saved from Google Docs may use simpler markup but different spacing. For conversion, the safest documents avoid floating text boxes and use tables only for tabular data.
Conversion gotchas are predictable. DOCX to PDF preserves visual pages better than DOCX to Markdown because PDF can keep layout while Markdown keeps structure. DOCX to HTML is useful for publishing but needs CSS cleanup. DOCX to plain text loses tables, links, footnotes, and images. DOCX to Markdown should happen after accepting or rejecting tracked changes; otherwise reviewers may disagree about which words are final. Embedded images can be extracted, but captions and references may detach. If the target is data extraction or AI ingestion, simplify the source first: remove headers that repeat on every page, normalize headings, and flatten decorative objects.
Think about the document's lifecycle before converting. If a contract must stay editable, DOCX or DOCX-to-DOCX cleanup is safer than PDF. If the goal is publication, PDF export should be reviewed for page breaks, section headers, widow lines, and missing fonts. If the goal is documentation, Markdown or HTML output should be checked for heading hierarchy, table shape, link destinations, and image references. If the document has macros, embedded spreadsheets, or signed approval fields, preserve the original and make a policy decision about what the derivative is allowed to omit. The cleanest conversions come from documents that separate content, styles, and layout rather than using visual tricks, and from teams that define whether comments and revisions are part of the record. Store that decision in the project handoff, not in someone's memory.

Common Word DOCX problems
Tracked changes appear in the converted text.
Accept or reject revisions in Word before converting, or choose a pipeline that explicitly renders markup.
Lists restart or indent incorrectly.
Repair list styles in the source DOCX; manual numbering is fragile across formats.
Text boxes disappear in Markdown or plain text.
Move important content into the main document flow before converting to structure-first formats.
A DOCM file raises security concerns.
Use a macro-free copy or convert in an isolated path; document conversion should not execute macros.
