Word DOCX to PDF converter

DOCX to PDF is rendered by our office engine headless, so the PDF reflects the document as opened on a server with installed substitute fonts.

From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Paragraph text Kept

Body text and most paragraph spacing render as they would in our office engine.

  • Fonts Changed

Missing fonts are substituted, including Carlito for Calibri and Liberation for Arial or Times New Roman.

  • Tracked changes Changed

Tracked edits render as accepted text; revision balloons and markup are not preserved in the PDF.

  • Comments Lost

Word comments are dropped rather than exported as PDF annotations or margin notes.

  • Form fields Changed

Fields are flattened to their displayed values; the PDF does not keep interactive Word controls.

  • Images and charts Kept

Inline images and Office charts usually render, though chart fonts can follow the same substitution rules as body text.

  • Page breaks Changed

Manual breaks are kept, but pagination can shift when font substitution changes line wrapping.

Sample conversions

Contract with comments

Input
18-page contract with tracked redlines, 14 comments, Calibri body text, signature blocks, and two fillable fields.
Output
The PDF showed the accepted contract text with signature blocks in place. Comments were not present, fillable fields became static text, and Carlito slightly changed line endings on two pages.

Board memo

Input
9-page board memo with a cover page, table of contents, Excel chart pasted from Office, and Arial headings.
Output
The cover and chart rendered correctly. Arial substituted to Liberation Sans, which changed the table-of-contents leader spacing but did not change the page count.

A real Word DOCX → PDF run

We converted our Word DOCX sample (11 KB) with Office engine on 2026-09-11. It took 553 ms and produced a 25 KB PDF file, 2.3× larger than the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Options and when to change them

pageSize
Use when the document should be forced to Letter or A4 instead of relying on the DOCX page setup.
margins
Use only when you want server-side margin overrides; existing Word section margins are otherwise used.
toc
Use when the source headings should generate or refresh a visible table of contents before PDF export.

Do it yourself

LibreOffice

bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf report.docx --outdir .

The CLI uses the fonts installed on your machine; output can differ from our server if your font set is different.

Word DOCX to PDF by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=docx&to=pdf.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.docx" -F "from=docx" -F "to=pdf" \

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If reviewers need tracked changes and comments, send the DOCX or export a marked-up PDF from Word instead.
  • If exact Microsoft Word pagination is required, export from the same Word installation used to author the document.
  • If form fields must remain interactive, use a PDF form workflow rather than flattening DOCX controls.

Word DOCX to PDF questions

Will comments appear in the converted PDF?

No. Our office engine exports the document body and drops Word comments in this route.

What happens to tracked changes?

Tracked changes are rendered as accepted, so the PDF shows the final text rather than markup.

Why did a page break move compared with Word?

The server substitutes missing fonts. Even close substitutes such as Carlito for Calibri can change line wrapping enough to move pagination.

Are Word form fields still fillable in the PDF?

No. Form fields are flattened to the values visible in the DOCX at conversion time.
