Markdown to LaTeX converter

Markdown to LaTeX emits our document engine-flavored LaTeX source, so the output is useful as editable TeX but not identical to a hand-authored preamble.

From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Headings Changed

The Markdown H1/H2 headings became \section and \subsection commands with generated labels derived from the Unicode title text.

  • Inline math Kept

The inline equation E=mc^2 stayed as LaTeX math delimited with \( and \), without being flattened to Unicode text.

  • Pipe tables Changed

The pipe table became a longtable environment using booktabs-style \toprule, \midrule, and \bottomrule commands.

  • Footnotes Kept

The Markdown footnote was converted to a normal \footnote command in the paragraph where the reference appeared.

  • Code fences Changed

The TypeScript fence became Shaded and Highlighting environments that need our document engine's highlighting definitions when compiled outside standalone mode.

  • Local images Changed

The image syntax became \pandocbounded{\includegraphics[keepaspectratio]{assets/pixel.png}}, leaving asset availability to the later TeX build.

  • Citation markers Changed

The bare citation marker was escaped as {[}@doe2026{]} rather than becoming a \cite command or bibliography reference.

Sample conversions

Markdown QA note

Input
Markdown with title metadata, bold and italic text, inline math, a [@doe2026] citation marker, a footnote, a pipe table, a relative image, and a TypeScript fence.
Output
818-byte .tex fragment with sections, \(E=mc^2\), a longtable, \footnote text, an includegraphics reference wrapped in \pandocbounded, and Shaded/Highlighting code markup.

Table and code cleanup

Input
Two-column results section where one numeric table column was right-aligned and the code block was fenced with ts language metadata.
Output
The LaTeX preserved right alignment in the longtable column spec and emitted syntax token commands such as \KeywordTok and \DecValTok, so a standalone preamble is needed before compiling.

A real Markdown → LaTeX run

We converted our Markdown sample (472 B) with Document engine on 2026-09-11. It took 16 ms and produced a 884 B LaTeX file, 1.9× larger than the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Options and when to change them

standalone
Use when the output should include a full LaTeX document wrapper instead of a fragment for inclusion in another document.
md_flavour
Set only when the Markdown source should be read as gfm, commonmark, or our document engine markdown instead of the default reader choice.

Do it yourself

pandoc

bash
pandoc notes.md -f markdown -t latex -o notes.tex

Add --standalone when you need a compilable document with pandoc's required macros and highlighting definitions.

Markdown to LaTeX by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Document engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=md&to=latex.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.md" -F "from=md" -F "to=latex" \

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If you need a finished PDF, use /convert/md-to-pdf so our document engine typeset the document.
  • If your goal is Word editing, use /convert/md-to-docx because LaTeX is a source format, not a reviewer-friendly document.
  • If the Markdown has Mermaid or browser-rendered widgets, render those to images before expecting TeX output to include them.

Markdown to LaTeX questions

Is the Markdown to LaTeX output ready for pdflatex?

The default API output is a fragment. Code highlighting and image wrappers can require our document engine's standalone preamble before a TeX engine can compile it.

What happens to Markdown pipe tables?

Our document engine rewrites them as longtable markup with booktabs-style rules. That is normal LaTeX source, but it is more verbose than the original Markdown.

Do [@cite] markers become LaTeX citations?

Not in the tested file. The bare marker was escaped as visible text because no citation processing or bibliography file was supplied.

Does the converter copy image files next to the .tex?

No. The generated .tex referenced the original relative path, so the later TeX build must have the image at that path.
