About OpenDocument Text
ODT is the OpenDocument Text format used by LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Collabora, and other office suites. It is usually a zipped package containing XML for body content, automatic styles, named styles, metadata, settings, manifests, and embedded media. ODT is an editable word-processing format, so it can contain sections, headings, lists, tables, images, footnotes, fields, comments, tracked changes, and indexes. Our enabled routes convert ODT to DOCX, PDF, HTML, Markdown, TXT, RTF, reStructuredText, LaTeX, EPUB, and back from several document sources through Pandoc or LibreOffice depending on the target. The package is inspectable with zip tools when debugging damaged files.
Versions matter because OpenDocument 1.2 and 1.3 features are not interpreted identically by every office suite. Formula objects, change tracking, bibliography fields, page styles, master documents, embedded charts, and custom metadata may not map to Word or Markdown cleanly. Fonts are referenced by name and may not be embedded. Page layout can depend on printer metrics and installed fonts. ODT files can also be flat XML variants, templates, or documents saved by online suites that simplify some structures. A conversion must choose between preserving visual pages and preserving semantic document structure.
Readers and writers include LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Google Docs exports, OnlyOffice, academic offices, public-sector document systems, open-source projects, and standards-focused archives. Word can open ODT, but list numbering, page styles, fields, and comments deserve review after conversion. DOCX is usually the practical target when collaborating with Word users. PDF is the better target for distribution. Markdown, reStructuredText, and LaTeX are useful when ODT content is moving into documentation, but page layout, tracked changes, and embedded objects will not remain editable in the same way. That mismatch is common during mixed-suite reviews.
ODT conversion gotchas appear around styles and fields. ODT to DOCX can keep paragraphs, headings, lists, and tables, yet page styles and formulas may change. ODT to PDF renders a page view and is sensitive to fonts. ODT to Markdown extracts structure but loses page headers, comments, and many office-specific features. ODT to RTF simplifies the model for older word processors. Before converting, accept or reject tracked changes, update fields, embed or note required fonts, and decide whether images should stay inline or be extracted. Review headings and list nesting in the target, not just the first page.

Common OpenDocument Text problems
Word collaborators need an editable copy.
Use /convert/odt-to-docx, then check page styles, list numbering, comments, and formulas in Word.
The document must be sent as a read-only layout.
Use /convert/odt-to-pdf and compare fonts, headers, footers, and page breaks with LibreOffice output.
Documentation content needs Markdown.
Use /convert/odt-to-md, then repair image references, tables, and heading levels before committing it.
An older word processor requires RTF.
Use /convert/odt-to-rtf, but expect a simpler document model and review footnotes and tables.
HTML content should become an editable ODT draft.
Use /convert/html-to-odt, then remove navigation and generated web-only elements that do not belong in a document.
