From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Headings Kept

The sample PDF produced h1 and h2 elements for the activity-trail title and section headings.

  • Tables Kept

Deep Read returned the Q2/Q3 metrics as a Markdown table that our document engine wrote as HTML table markup.

  • Numeric alignment Kept

The ARR and retention columns were right-aligned in the generated HTML table cells.

  • Emphasis Kept

Prepared for became strong text and the date became emphasized text in the HTML output.

  • Lists Kept

The two bullets and two approval steps became ul and ol list elements.

  • Page numbers Changed

The page number from the PDF appeared as a standalone paragraph containing 1 at the end.

  • Exact layout Lost

The result used our document engine's 36em centered HTML layout rather than PDF coordinates or page geometry.

Sample conversions

Headline metrics region

Input
One-page sample PDF titled Feedback Atlas with a Headline numbers table for ARR and net revenue retention.
Output
Deep Read plus our document engine produced an h1, h2, and an HTML table with ARR $4.1M to $4.9M and retention 108% to 113%.

Actions and narrative region

Input
The same sample PDF page with a What went well section, two bullets, a slipped-renewals sentence, and two numbered approvals.
Output
The HTML kept the bullets and ordered list, bolded 94%, and left the original page number as a stray final paragraph.

A real PDF → HTML run

We converted our PDF sample (91 KB) with AI Deep Read under AI Deep Read on 2026-09-11. It took 4.7 s and produced a 5 KB HTML file, 95% smaller than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Is your file a scan?

A scanned PDF usually has no selectable text and looks like one large page image when you try to highlight a word. This route uses AI Deep Read, so it spends one vision credit per processed page and should be reviewed against the original when the scan is faint, skewed, handwritten, or table-heavy.

Options and when to change them

pageRange
Set when only selected PDF pages should be read and charged by AI Deep Read.
maxPages
Use to cap long PDFs so the conversion stops before spending credits on every page.
extractTablesAsGfm
Keep enabled when detected tables should become Markdown pipe tables before our document engine writes HTML tables.
preserveLayout
Set when visible columns or form sections matter more than clean semantic reading order.
languageHint
Set when OCR auto-detection struggles with a known language or mixed-language PDF.

Do it yourself

pdftotext + pandoc

bash
pdftotext -layout input.pdf output.txt
pandoc output.txt -f markdown -t html --standalone -o output.html

This is a digital-PDF workaround, not Deep Read. It will not OCR scans or reconstruct tables as consistently.

PDF to HTML by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (AI Deep Read); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=pdf&to=html.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.pdf" -F "from=pdf" -F "to=html" \
  -F "deepRead=true" \
  --output output.html

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If you need editable Word content, use /convert/pdf-to-docx instead of HTML.
  • If you only need extracted prose, /convert/pdf-to-md avoids the extra HTML wrapper.
  • If exact page appearance matters, keep the PDF because this route rebuilds semantic HTML.

PDF to HTML questions

Does PDF to HTML use the PDF text layer?

No for this pair. The live route requires AI Deep Read, so the PDF is read page-by-page and then rendered to HTML from Markdown.

Will the HTML look like the PDF page?

Not exactly. The output uses our document engine's standalone HTML stylesheet and semantic elements instead of fixed PDF coordinates.

What should I check after PDF to HTML?

Check tables, page numbers, and reading order first. In the sample run, the table was good but the page number became a stray paragraph.
