Photoshop PSD to PNG converter

PSD → PNG composites the layer stack into one flat image, which is the right move for previews and delivery copies and the wrong one for editing.

What you get — and what changes

  • Layer composite Changed

The two-layer 640×400 sample flattened to a PNG whose pixels matched a reference composite exactly (mean difference 0).

  • Layer opacity and blending Changed

A 55%-opaque white box on the label layer was blended into the gradient beneath it; the result is baked in and cannot be lifted off again.

  • Layer names and structure Lost

Background and Label layer are not recorded anywhere in the PNG; the output is one image with no layer metadata.

  • Transparency Kept

Alpha is preserved where the composite is transparent; our sample had an opaque background, so the PNG came out RGB rather than RGBA.

  • Text layers Changed

Type is rendered as pixels from the composite; there is no editable text in the PNG.

  • Colour depth and profile Changed

8-bit RGB PSDs map directly; ICC profiles and 16-bit channels are not written to the PNG.

  • File size Changed

The 85,867-byte PackBits PSD produced a 6,120-byte optimized PNG because flat colour compresses well.

Sample conversions

Two-layer mock-up

Input
sample.psd, 640×400 RGB, 85,867 bytes: a gradient background layer and a label layer with a semi-transparent box, a line of text and a yellow disc.
Output
640×400 RGB PNG, 6,120 bytes, in 15 ms, with the warning that layers were flattened to the composite image.

PSD saved without a composite preview

Input
A PSD written with Maximize Compatibility off, so the file carries layers but no merged image.
Output
Our image engine composites the layers itself; if a file has neither layers nor a preview, the conversion fails with a clear error instead of a blank PNG.

A real Photoshop PSD → PNG run

We converted our Photoshop PSD sample (84 KB) with Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 50 ms and produced a 6 KB PNG file, 93% smaller than the input. The engine raised 2 warnings, listed below.

Input · sample.psd · 84 KB

Output · sample.png · 6 KB

Options and when to change them

width
Set it to produce a web-sized preview straight from the full-resolution PSD.
stripMetadata
Leave it on for deliverables; PSD files can carry document history and author fields you do not want shipped.
background
Irrelevant for PNG, which keeps alpha; it only applies when you convert the same PSD to JPG or BMP.

Do it yourself

psd-tools (Python)

bash
from psd_tools import PSDImage

PSDImage.open("in.psd").composite().save("out.png")

composite() ignores some adjustment layers and layer effects; compare against Photoshop's own flatten for complex files.

ImageMagick

bash
magick in.psd[0] out.png

Index [0] is the merged image Photoshop stored; without it you get one PNG per layer.

Photoshop PSD to PNG by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Image engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=psd&to=png.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If the recipient must edit layers, send the PSD or export from Photoshop to TIFF with layers; PNG is flat by definition.
  • If the file is a photo without transparency, PSD → JPG or PSD → WebP is far smaller than PNG.
  • If you need a print proof, PSD → PDF keeps the page size; PNG has no page size.

Photoshop PSD to PNG questions

Does PSD → PNG keep transparency?

Yes, wherever the composite is transparent. A PSD with a filled background layer produces an opaque PNG, so hide or delete that layer in Photoshop first if you need a cut-out.

Are adjustment layers and layer styles applied?

Pixel layers, opacity and normal blending are composited. Some adjustment layers and effects are approximated or skipped, so check drop shadows and curves against Photoshop before publishing.

Why is the PNG so much smaller than the PSD?

The PSD stores every layer's channels separately plus a merged preview; the PNG stores one image with deflate compression. Our two-layer sample shrank from 85,867 to 6,120 bytes.
