Sample conversions

Rich Excel workbook

Input: XLSX with Pipeline and Notes sheets, merged title, date cells, numeric ARR, and a formula-backed total.
Output: ODS kept both sheet names and visible values. The content file had no formula marker and did not preserve the merge.

Fixture workbook

Input: Sample XLSX with four sales pipeline rows and a second Notes sheet.
Output: ODS content text contained the pipeline rows followed by note and second sheet from the extra tab.

A real Excel XLSX → OpenDocument Spreadsheet run

We converted our Excel XLSX sample (17 KB) with Table engine on 2026-09-11. It took 6 ms and produced a 10 KB OpenDocument Spreadsheet file, 42% smaller than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Options and when to change them

sheet: Select one Excel sheet when the output should omit lookup or notes tabs.
headerRowIndex: Use when an Excel report has title rows above the row that should become field names.
dateHandling: Choose string handling when Excel's displayed date text must be preserved for a Calc user.

LibreOffice can preserve more presentation than tabular-ir, but formulas still need review across spreadsheet formats.

Excel XLSX to OpenDocument Spreadsheet by API or MCP

When this is the wrong conversion

Do not use this route for a styled Excel dashboard, chart pack, protected workbook, or formula-heavy model.
Use /convert/xlsx-to-csv when a system needs one flat sheet instead of an ODS workbook.

Does XLSX to ODS keep Excel formulas?

No. The observed ODS had the cached total value but no formula marker, because our table engine rebuilds tables from values.

Will multiple sheets survive XLSX to ODS?

Yes by default. The Pipeline and Notes sheets were both written as OpenDocument tables in our run.

Why did Excel formatting disappear?

The app route uses a tabular intermediate representation focused on data. Styles, widths, merged ranges, and charts are not stored there.
