About ASS subtitles
ASS, Advanced SubStation Alpha, is a subtitle script format designed for styled captions rather than plain timed text. A file is divided into sections such as Script Info, V4+ Styles, Events, and sometimes embedded fonts or graphics references. Dialogue rows contain ordered fields for layer, start time, end time, style, actor, margins, effects, and text. Inline override tags can change fonts, colors, positions, movement, and karaoke timing inside a cue. Our subtitle routes convert ASS to SRT, VTT, TXT, CSV, or JSON. Those targets can carry timings and text, but most ASS presentation control is richer than they can represent.
ASS descends from SSA, so older .ssa files and newer .ass files share concepts but differ in style capabilities and common tooling. Files often assume particular fonts, screen resolutions, video aspect ratios, text encodings, and renderer behavior such as libass compatibility. Styles reference font names that may not be installed on another machine. Override tags can place captions at exact coordinates, animate text, rotate signs, or time karaoke syllables. Commas are field separators in Dialogue rows, so parsers must respect the declared Format line instead of splitting caption text casually.
Readers and writers include Aegisub, libass-based players, fansub workflows, anime release tooling, video renderers, localization teams, and QA scripts. ASS is good when the subtitle appearance is part of the video experience, such as signs, overlapping speakers, lyrics, or styled on-screen text. It is not a simple interchange format for web captions. Platforms that accept SRT or VTT may reject ASS entirely or flatten it by rendering subtitles into the video. CSV and JSON outputs are useful for translators and automation, but they are not substitutes for a styled subtitle renderer.
ASS conversion gotchas are mostly style loss. ASS to SRT keeps plain cue timing and text but drops styles, absolute positioning, movement, layers, and karaoke tags. ASS to VTT can create a browser track for basic captions, but WebVTT does not carry the same renderer model. ASS to TXT is a transcript extraction. ASS to CSV or JSON can expose event rows, but override tags may need stripping or separate handling. Before converting, decide whether the subtitle is a caption track or a visual typesetting layer. If styling matters, preserve the ASS and render through a compatible video pipeline.

Common ASS subtitles problems
A platform only accepts simple captions.
Use /convert/ass-to-srt for timing and text, then accept that positioning, colors, and karaoke tags are removed.
Browser playback needs a WebVTT track.
Use /convert/ass-to-vtt, then test cue text in the player because ASS renderer effects do not translate fully.
Translators need an editable table of events.
Use /convert/ass-to-csv and preserve style and actor columns so lines can be matched back to the script.
Search indexing should ignore styling commands.
Use /convert/ass-to-txt, then remove any remaining override fragments that were part of visual typesetting.
Automation needs structured subtitle records.
Use /convert/ass-to-json, then validate field mapping against the ASS Format line and cue count.
