From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • EXIF orientation Changed

The source JPEG's Orientation 6 tag was applied, so the AVIF round-trip image measured 64×96 instead of 96×64.

  • Camera metadata Lost

The AVIF derivative is not a dependable carrier for the JPEG Make, Software, Artist, or Orientation tags.

  • ICC profile Changed

The AVIF round-trip to PNG exposed an ICC profile, but not as the original JPEG metadata package.

  • Compression Changed

The 3,044 byte oriented JPEG sample became a 2,295 byte AVIF at quality 90.

  • JPEG damage Kept

The AVIF encoder receives decoded JPEG pixels, so prior blocking and sharpening artifacts are still present.

  • Legacy support Changed

AVIF is a newer delivery format, so some upload forms that accept JPG will reject the converted file.

Sample conversions

Phone-style portrait flag

Input
A 96×64 JPEG with Orientation 6, camera-like EXIF strings, and an embedded sRGB profile.
Output
A 2,295 byte AVIF. A PNG round trip measured 64×96, confirming the visual rotation was baked into pixels.

Noisy photo quality probe

Input
A 320×240 noisy JPEG, 74,881 bytes, used to compare the encoder quality setting.
Output
Direct our image engine produced 6,652 bytes at quality 20 and 64,446 bytes at quality 90, showing the option affects AVIF size.

A real JPEG → AVIF run

We converted our JPEG sample (42 KB) with Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 142 ms and produced a 22 KB AVIF file, 49% smaller than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Is your file a scan?

AVIF is not an OCR step for photographed documents. If a JPG contains a receipt or form, extract text before converting the photo into a web delivery format.

Options and when to change them

quality
Lower it for catalog thumbnails; raise it for large hero photos where fine texture and gradients are visible.
width
Set width while converting if the AVIF will be served at a fixed breakpoint instead of full camera size.
height
Use with width and fit for exact cards; omit one dimension to preserve the rotated aspect ratio.
fit
Choose cover for uniform photo grids, contain for uncropped previews, and fill for intentional distortion only.

Do it yourself

avifenc

bash
avifenc --quality 70 in.jpg out.avif

Apply EXIF rotation first if your JPEG viewer uses metadata rather than upright stored pixels.

JPEG to AVIF by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Image engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=jpg&to=avif.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.jpg" -F "from=jpg" -F "to=avif" \
  -F 'options={"dpi":96}' \
  --output output.avif

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Keep JPG for social uploads, email attachments, and older systems that do not accept AVIF.
  • Use the camera original if EXIF metadata is part of the record.
  • Use JPG → WebP when WebP is supported but AVIF is not allowed by the publishing stack.

JPEG to AVIF questions

Does JPG → AVIF rotate portrait photos correctly?

Yes in the measured Orientation 6 case. The output pixels were upright when converted back to PNG for inspection.

Can AVIF keep the original JPEG EXIF?

Do not rely on it here. Treat the AVIF as a visual derivative and keep the JPG if capture metadata matters.

Is quality 90 always smaller than the JPG?

No. AVIF can be smaller, but complex or noisy images at high quality can still be large. The quality setting should be checked against the actual photo set.
