What you get — and what changes

  • One image per slide Kept

A five-slide deck gave five PNGs in one ZIP, numbered in slide order; asking for one slide gives a bare PNG.

  • Pixel size Changed

    Slides render at 144 DPI: a 4:3 slide is 2048 × 1536 pixels and a 16:9 slide 3840 × 2160. Set width to 1920 or 1280 for normal screen use.

  • Slide appearance Changed

The PNG follows our PDF layout, so the backgrounds, colour fills and font changes noted for Keynote → PDF are baked into the picture.

  • Text Changed

Slide text becomes pixels; it cannot be searched or copied, and screen readers get nothing from it.

  • Presenter notes and builds Lost

Images show the finished slide only; presenter notes and build steps are not included.

  • Flat colour and line art Kept

Icon shapes, frames and flat-colour artwork stay crisp edged, which is where PNG beats JPEG.

Options and when to change them

width
Set 1920 for full-HD screens or 1280 for web pages; the 144 DPI default is 3840 pixels wide on 16:9 decks.
max_pages
Use 1 to get just the title slide as a cover or link preview.
dpi
Lower it when you want smaller files without fixing an exact width.

Do it yourself

LibreOffice and pdftoppm

bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf deck.key && pdftoppm -png -scale-to-x 1920 -scale-to-y -1 deck.pdf slide

Scaling to 1920 pixels wide keeps files a quarter the size of a 3840-pixel render.

Keynote

bash
File → Export To → Images → PNG

Exact rendering, one file per slide, and an option to export each build step.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If the slides are full-bleed photos, Keynote → JPG gives far smaller files.
  • If the audience should be able to copy text or follow links, send Keynote → PDF.

Apple Keynote to PNG questions

Why are the PNGs so large?

A 16:9 Keynote slide is 1920 × 1080 points, and at 144 DPI that becomes 3840 × 2160 pixels. Set width to 1920 or 1280 to get screen-sized images.

Can I get one image per build step?

No. Each slide becomes one image with everything showing. Keynote's own image export can write each build as a separate file.

Do I get a ZIP for a one-slide deck?

No. A single slide comes back as a bare PNG; decks with more than one slide come back as a ZIP in slide order.
