Keynote → PPTX gets a Mac presentation into PowerPoint with every slide and its text still editable, but theme artwork, colour fills and builds are the parts to check before anyone presents it.
Converted with Office engine · input deleted within 24 h
Every deck we could count kept its slides, from one-slide quotes to six-slide templates, and both 4:3 decks (1024 × 768) and 16:9 decks (1920 × 1080) kept their shape.
Text
Kept
Titles, bullets and captions arrive as editable PowerPoint text boxes, not pictures of text.
Tables
Kept
A Keynote table with nine cells, including the date 5/5/1985, became a real PowerPoint table you can type into.
Presenter notes
Kept
Both test decks that carried a presenter note, one from Keynote '09 and one from Keynote for iPad, had it in PowerPoint's notes pane after conversion.
Theme sample text
Changed
On a Keynote 11 quotation slide, the theme's prompt text 'Type a quote here' and 'Johnny Appleseed' appeared on top of the real quote; delete those boxes by hand.
Backgrounds and colour fills
Lost
A parchment photo behind a quote was dropped, leaving flat olive, and the coloured bands of an infographic light bulb turned black.
Fonts
Changed
The PPTX keeps Apple font names such as Helvetica Neue, Gill Sans and Didot. PowerPoint on a Mac shows them; on Windows it substitutes, and titles can wrap.
Builds and animations
Lost
None of the 17 converted decks had any animation steps in PowerPoint; objects that built in one by one are simply on the slide.

Sample conversions
Keynote '09 deck with a table and a note
Input
221,745-byte deck from Apache Tika's test set: title slide, text slide and a slide with a 3 × 3 table, plus one presenter note.
Output
47,618-byte PPTX, 3 slides, in 1.5 s. The table is a native PowerPoint table and the note sits in the notes pane.
Themed quotation slide from Keynote 11
Input
550,492-byte one-slide 16:9 deck on the Renaissance theme: a short quote and attribution over a parchment photo.
Output
21,700-byte PPTX in 2.1 s. Quote and attribution are there, but the parchment is gone and the theme's sample quote and name are printed over the real ones.
Photo-book template from Keynote 14.5
Input
386,117-byte deck last edited on an iPad and a Mac: five 4:3 slides with title and caption boxes over a camera graphic.
Output
122,227-byte PPTX, 5 slides, in 2.1 s, with 3 masters and 36 layouts; slides match the original apart from the typeface.
A real Apple Keynote → PowerPoint PPTX run

△Theme backgrounds, colour fills and builds are not carried over; check each slide.
△On themed slides the theme's sample text can appear next to yours; delete it in PowerPoint.
Options and when to change them
filter
Leave it unset to get a PowerPoint 2007–365 file. Change it only when a script needs a specific presentation export filter.
Do it yourself
LibreOffice
bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pptx --outdir out deck.key
LibreOffice Impress reads Keynote '09 and current files. Expect the same theme problems: check backgrounds and delete stray sample text.
Keynote (Mac, iPad or iCloud.com)
bash
File → Export To → PowerPoint (iCloud.com: Download a Copy → PowerPoint)
Made by the app that wrote the deck, so themes and builds are handled by Apple; use it when the deck will be presented, not just edited.
Apple Keynote to PowerPoint PPTX by API or MCP
The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=key&to=pptx.
If you only need to show, send or print the slides, Keynote → PDF needs no clean-up in PowerPoint.
If the deck depends on builds, Magic Move or video, export from Keynote at iCloud.com; we drop all animation.
If the deck uses a photographic theme background, check every slide or export from Keynote; those backgrounds were the most common loss.
Apple Keynote to PowerPoint PPTX questions
Can PowerPoint open a .key file?
No. PowerPoint on Windows and Mac does not import Keynote files, so the deck has to be exported by Keynote or rebuilt as PPTX by a converter like this one.
Why is there text like 'Type a quote here' on my slide?
Keynote themes carry sample text for empty placeholders that Keynote hides once you type. Our office engine sometimes writes that sample text as a visible box next to yours; click it in PowerPoint and delete it.
Do builds and transitions carry over?
Builds do not: no converted deck kept any animation steps. Everything that built in appears on the slide from the start, so re-add the animations you need in PowerPoint.
Does it work with decks made on an iPad or at iCloud.com?
Yes. The test set included decks last saved by Keynote for iPad and by Keynote on iCloud.com alongside Mac decks from Keynote '09 to 14.5, and all of them opened.
