PNG to TIFF converter

PNG to TIFF is mainly for moving a raster image into TIFF-based imaging workflows, not for creating a multi-page scan archive.

From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Pixel dimensions Kept

The 420×260 PNG wrote a 420×260 TIFF with the same single-frame dimensions.

  • Transparency Kept

The transparent PNG output opened as an RGBA TIFF, so alpha was retained in the tested file.

  • Compression Changed

The 2,192 byte optimized PNG became a 3,010 byte TIFF using tiff_adobe_deflate compression.

  • Frame count Kept

A single PNG produced a single TIFF frame; the converter does not combine several PNGs into a multi-page TIFF here.

  • DPI metadata Changed

The inspected TIFF reported 1×1 dpi, so do not rely on this path to set scanner-grade resolution tags.

  • PNG text chunks Lost

The TIFF writer is about pixels; PNG ancillary text chunks should not be expected in the output.

Sample conversions

Transparent PNG badge

Input
2,192 byte optimized PNG, 420×260, RGBA, with transparent canvas and overlapping teal and slate shapes.
Output
3,010 byte TIFF, 420×260, RGBA, tiff_adobe_deflate. Alpha remained, but dpi metadata inspected as 1×1.

PNG proof entering a TIFF workflow

Input
A single flat PNG exported from a design tool for a system that only accepts TIFF uploads.
Output
One deflate-compressed TIFF frame. It satisfied a TIFF-only slot, but it did not add scanner metadata or extra pages.

A real PNG → TIFF run

We converted our PNG sample (20 KB) with Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 50 ms and produced a 19 KB TIFF file, about the same size as the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Is your file a scan?

PNG to TIFF does not recognize or OCR text inside a screenshot or scan. It only changes the raster container, so Deep Read remains the text-extraction route.

Options and when to change them

width
Resize PNG artwork before TIFF output if the receiving imaging system has maximum pixel dimensions.
height
Set height with width for a fixed raster box; leave unset to keep the PNG aspect ratio.
fit
Use contain to pad onto a required canvas or cover when the TIFF target wants a cropped thumbnail.

Do it yourself

Pillow 11

bash
from PIL import Image

Image.open("art.png").save("art.tiff", compression="tiff_deflate")

Add resolution metadata yourself if the downstream system validates TIFF dpi tags.

PNG to TIFF by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Image engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=png&to=tiff.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.png" -F "from=png" -F "to=tiff" \
  -F 'options={"dpi":96}' \
  --output output.tif

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Use /convert/png-to-jpg when the real goal is a smaller opaque photo-style file.
  • Use /convert/png-to-ico for favicon packaging rather than handing a TIFF to browser icon tooling.
  • Keep PNG when transparency and web compatibility are the primary needs.

PNG to TIFF questions

Does PNG to TIFF keep transparency?

Yes for the RGBA sample. The converted TIFF opened in RGBA mode with the transparent canvas still present.

What TIFF compression is used?

The inspected output used tiff_adobe_deflate. That differs from the PNG compression stream and may be larger or smaller depending on pixels.

Can PNG to TIFF make a multi-page TIFF?

Not from one uploaded PNG in this pair. The run produced a single-frame TIFF, so page assembly needs a different workflow.
