About PowerPoint PPT
PPT is the legacy binary PowerPoint presentation format used before PPTX became the default. It stores slide content, masters, notes, drawings, media references, embedded objects, and presentation metadata in an OLE Compound File structure. Many old corporate templates, training decks, government forms, and archive attachments still use it. Our enabled PPT routes use LibreOffice to convert PPT to PPTX, ODP, PDF, or HTML. That makes PPT conversion mainly a modernization or fixed-output task: open the old binary deck safely, make a modern editable copy, or produce a static review version without depending on an old PowerPoint installation.
Version details affect import quality. PPT covers multiple PowerPoint generations and may contain old drawing objects, WordArt, embedded spreadsheets, macros in related formats, custom slide masters, obsolete media codecs, linked files, printer-dependent sizing, and fonts that no longer exist on the conversion host. The binary structure is harder to inspect than PPTX's zipped XML parts. Some files named .ppt are damaged, password-protected, or actually different content types from old mail systems. A converter should not execute active content. It should render the deck as faithfully as possible, then expose differences for human review.
Readers and writers include old PowerPoint, LibreOffice Impress, archive systems, learning-management systems, sales libraries, legal discovery collections, and conversion farms. Modern collaborators usually want PPTX so they can edit slides in current Office apps. OpenDocument teams may want ODP. Reviewers often want PDF because it freezes slide appearance and is easier to circulate. Web migrations may ask for HTML, but slide layout, notes, and animations are not naturally web components. The right target depends on whether the deck remains a source file or becomes a snapshot for review only and archiving.
PPT conversion gotchas are the old presentation equivalents of document modernization. PPT to PPTX can preserve many slide elements but may change fonts, masters, embedded objects, and animation behavior. PPT to PDF gives one page per slide but flattens transitions, builds, video, and audio. PPT to HTML is a review or extraction path, not a replacement for an interactive deck. Before converting, identify hidden slides, speaker notes, linked media, and brand fonts. Open the output in the actual destination app and compare a chart slide, an image-heavy slide, a notes slide, and any slide with animation.
Common PowerPoint PPT problems
An old deck needs editing in current PowerPoint.
Use /convert/ppt-to-pptx, then inspect masters, fonts, charts, and animations in PowerPoint.
A fixed review copy is needed for stakeholders.
Use /convert/ppt-to-pdf and confirm hidden slides, notes policy, and page orientation before sending it.
Our office engine users need an editable deck.
Use /convert/ppt-to-odp, then check font substitution and slide master differences in Impress.
A web archive needs quick slide previews.
Use /convert/ppt-to-html, but review linked images and interactive media because the deck becomes static markup.
Videos or audio do not play after conversion.
Use /convert/ppt-to-pptx for an editable modernization, then re-embed media files that were only linked.
