EPUB vs MOBI vs AZW3 for Kindle

EPUB is a ZIP package containing HTML, CSS, images, metadata, and a manifest. It is the common non-Amazon ebook exchange format for publishers, libraries, and reading apps. EPUB can be reflowable, fixed-layout, or enhanced with features that not every reader supports.

MOBI is an older Kindle-era format with limited styling. AZW3, also called KF8, is Amazon’s later format with better layout and CSS support. Modern Kindle delivery may also use KFX, which is Amazon’s newer rendering format generated by Amazon’s tooling and services.

Amazon changed Send to Kindle behavior in 2022. EPUB is accepted for sending, while MOBI and AZW files are no longer accepted for that path. Amazon converts the uploaded EPUB for delivery to Kindle devices and apps.

This confuses people because Kindle devices are not simply native EPUB readers in the same way many other ebook apps are. The sending service accepts EPUB as input, then Amazon prepares a Kindle-compatible copy. For side-loaded files, device model and software version decide what works.

Calibre can convert many DRM-free ebooks between EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, PDF, and other formats. It cannot convert DRM-protected books unless the DRM has already been lawfully removed outside Calibre. A failure on a purchased book is often a rights-management issue, not a file-corruption issue.

A typical local conversion is ebook-convert book.epub book.azw3. That is useful for a personal Kindle file, but it is not the same as Amazon’s KFX processing and may not match official store typography or hyphenation.

Reflowable EPUB and AZW3 let the reader change font size, margins, and line spacing. Page numbers are fluid. PDF is fixed-layout and often awkward on small e-reader screens. MOBI may lose modern CSS, embedded fonts, and layout details that EPUB and AZW3 can keep.

For novels and prose, EPUB to Kindle usually works well. For textbooks, comics, musical scores, and fixed-layout children’s books, test on the target device. A conversion that looks fine in a desktop viewer can be poor on a six-inch screen.

Keep EPUB as the source when you are preparing a book for broad distribution or Send to Kindle. Use AZW3 for DRM-free personal side-loading when the target Kindle supports it. Treat MOBI as a legacy compatibility format, not a modern publishing target.

If you need a printable or shareable document, convert EPUB to PDF deliberately and choose page size. Reflowable ebook structure does not have stable pages until the PDF generator creates them.

Library cleanup should distinguish ownership, format, and delivery path. A DRM-free EPUB you created, a store-purchased AZW3, and an old MOBI download may all appear as “Kindle books,” but they have different rights and conversion options. Start by identifying the real file and whether DRM is present.

For authors, EPUB is the practical manuscript handoff format before Amazon processing. For personal device testing, AZW3 can still be useful. For readers sharing notes with another person, avoid sending converted books unless rights permit it and the recipient’s workflow accepts the format.

A final Kindle workflow should separate conversion from delivery. Create or repair the EPUB first, confirm it opens in a normal reader, then send it to Amazon and review the Kindle-rendered copy separately.
