Word DOC to PDF converter

DOC to PDF opens the binary Word file in our office engine and prints a new PDF, so old compatibility quirks can surface before export.

From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Body text Kept

Readable DOC paragraphs rendered into selectable PDF text when our office engine could parse the binary container.

  • Heading styles Kept

Heading 1 and Heading 2 styling from the richer DOC remained visibly larger in the exported PDF.

  • Numbered lists Changed

The rich DOC PDF restarted the second list item at 1, then numbered the third item as 2.

  • Tables Changed

Table cell text survived, but PDF text extraction showed each column on separated lines rather than a compact grid.

  • Footnotes Changed

The footnote marker and note text were present, but they became static page text instead of live Word references.

  • Images Kept

The embedded one-pixel test image exported as a visible captioned figure in the PDF output.

  • Unreadable legacy files Lost

The bundled sample DOC produced a 1.1 KB PDF with no extractable body text, which is a real failure mode.

Sample conversions

Rich binary DOC

Input
Two-page legacy DOC with Q3 Migration Notes, two heading levels, a three-item numbered list, a 3-column table, a footnote, and a tiny embedded PNG.
Output
Our office engine produced a 24 KB PDF with selectable text, the table values, the footnote, and the image caption. The numbered list came out as 1, 1, 2 instead of 1, 2, 3.

Repository sample DOC

Input
9 KB fixture sample.doc identified as a Composite Document File V2 Word document.
Output
The API returned HTTP 200 and a 1.1 KB PDF, but pdftotext found no body content. Treat empty-looking DOC results as a parser failure to report.

A real Word DOC → PDF run

We converted our Word DOC sample (9 KB) with Office engine on 2026-09-11. It took 411 ms and produced a 1 KB PDF file, 88% smaller than the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Do it yourself

LibreOffice

bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf --outdir out input.doc

Binary DOC import depends on LibreOffice's parser and installed fonts, so compare the PDF with the source before relying on pagination.

Word DOC to PDF by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=doc&to=pdf.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.doc" -F "from=doc" -F "to=pdf" \
  --output output.pdf

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If you need an editable modern Word file, use /convert/doc-to-docx before making changes.
  • If the DOC opens blank in LibreOffice, ask for the original authoring copy or a fresh export rather than archiving an empty PDF.
  • If comments and tracked revisions matter, inspect the document in Word because this export prints the visible document state.

Word DOC to PDF questions

Why did my DOC to PDF output open blank?

Old binary DOC files are easier to mis-detect than DOCX containers. In our fixture run, our office engine returned a successful PDF with no body text, so an empty output should be treated as a conversion defect rather than a valid archive.

Does DOC to PDF keep Word list numbering?

Usually, but not always. The richer DOC run kept the list visible while restarting one item, which means legal numbering needs a page-by-page check.

Are footnotes still linked in the PDF?

No. The marker and footnote text are printed into the page, but the PDF does not keep editable Word footnote fields.
