When this is the wrong conversion

  • If the Word document is mostly page design, export PDF instead; Markdown will discard layout.
  • If reviewers must see comments and tracked deletions, keep the DOCX review copy.
  • If screenshots must travel inside one file, convert to HTML or DOCX rather than Markdown.

Word DOCX to Markdown questions

Do Word heading styles become Markdown headings?

Yes when the DOCX uses actual heading styles. Visually large bold paragraphs may not map as cleanly.

What happens to images from the DOCX?

The Markdown references images instead of embedding binary image data, so keep the extracted media with the .md file when needed.

Are tracked changes shown?

No. The Markdown contains the accepted version of the document rather than review markup.

Can complex Word tables be edited as Markdown tables?

Simple text tables convert well. Merged cells, nested tables, and images inside cells usually need manual cleanup.
