From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • EPUB package Changed

The output contained mimetype, META-INF/container.xml, EPUB/content.opf, nav.xhtml, CSS, and chapter XHTML.

  • Headings Kept

Heading 1 and Heading 2 became h1 and h2 elements and appeared in the EPUB navigation map.

  • Tables Kept

The three-column table survived as XHTML table markup with colgroup widths and right-aligned numbers.

  • Footnotes Kept

The footnote became an EPUB footnote aside with a noteref link from the chapter text.

  • Images Kept

The embedded PNG was copied to EPUB/media/file0.png and referenced from the chapter figure.

  • Book metadata Changed

The generated OPF used UNTITLED and language C because no explicit ebook metadata was supplied.

  • Page layout Lost

Word page geometry was replaced by reflowable chapter markup and reader-controlled CSS.

Sample conversions

Footnoted Word memo

Input
Rich DOCX with two heading levels, a list, a table, a footnote, a block quote, and a tiny embedded image.
Output
The 5.7 KB EPUB included ch001.xhtml, nav.xhtml, stylesheet1.css, EPUB/media/file0.png, and a footnote aside linked from the text.

Feedback Atlas document

Input
Sample DOCX with Feedback Atlas title, Headline numbers and What went well headings, a metrics table, and lists.
Output
The EPUB navigation listed the document title and both headings. The sample had no media, so the package contained only XHTML, CSS, nav, and OPF files.

Word DOCX to EPUB by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Document engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=docx&to=epub.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \

  -F "file=@input.docx" -F "from=docx" -F "to=epub" \

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If you need a fixed page proof, /convert/docx-to-pdf is a better match than reflowable EPUB.
  • If the source is already clean Markdown, /convert/md-to-epub avoids Word import artifacts.
  • If publishing metadata and cover design are required, use a dedicated ebook packaging workflow after conversion.

Word DOCX to EPUB questions

Does DOCX to EPUB create a table of contents?

Yes, heading styles are used for navigation. In the sample run, Q3 Migration Notes and Checklist appeared in the EPUB nav file.

Why is my EPUB title UNTITLED?

Our document engine writes generic metadata when the DOCX does not provide ebook metadata. Set title and author later if the EPUB will be distributed outside a quick review flow.

Are images copied into the EPUB?

Yes when our document engine can extract them from the DOCX. The rich run stored the tiny PNG under EPUB/media and referenced it from the chapter figure.
