What you get — and what changes

  • Chapter headings Kept

The inspected DOCX document.xml contained Heading1 styles for the rich EPUB chapter headings.

  • Images Kept

The rich EPUB image was written into word/media as a PNG relationship rather than being flattened to text.

  • Tables Kept

Feature, Table cell, Unicode café, and yes appeared as Word table cell text in document.xml.

  • Footnotes Changed

Our document engine moved footnote content into the DOCX footnotes part, so it was not visible inside document.xml.

  • Ebook CSS Changed

EPUB reader CSS became Word paragraph styles such as Title, Author, Date, BodyText, and Compact.

  • Package metadata Changed

The DOCX kept author-like text in the document, but OPF package fields no longer existed as ebook metadata.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Use /convert/epub-to-md if the next edits belong in Git, static site content, or a Markdown publishing workflow.
  • Use /convert/epub-to-pdf when layout review matters more than editing the text.
  • Do not use DOCX as an archive replacement for EPUB packages with fonts, covers, and reader navigation.

EPUB to Word DOCX questions

Will EPUB chapters become Word headings?

They did in the rich fixture. Our document engine mapped the chapter headings we inspected to Heading1 styles in the generated DOCX XML.

Where did the footnotes go in the DOCX?

They move into the DOCX footnotes part instead of staying inline in document.xml. Word displays them as notes, but XML inspection has to read word/footnotes.xml.

Can DOCX preserve the EPUB cover and reader navigation?

Not as EPUB package features. Images can be embedded, but OPF metadata, spine order files, nav.xhtml, and NCX are replaced by Word document structure.
