From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • HTML shell Changed

Our document engine wrote a fresh standalone HTML document with doctype, meta generator, viewport, title, and embedded CSS.

  • Chapter anchors Kept

The converted HTML kept chapter-related ids such as ch001.xhtml_chapter-one from the rich EPUB.

  • Images Changed

The output referenced extracted media paths rather than keeping the EPUB zip package organization.

  • Tables Kept

The feature table remained an HTML table, which is more structured than the TXT rendering.

  • Footnotes Kept

Footnote links and note text survived as HTML anchors rather than plain bracketed references.

  • EPUB navigation files Lost

nav.xhtml, toc.ncx, content.opf, and the spine did not remain separate files in the HTML output.

Sample conversions

Rich EPUB web proof

Input
EPUB with title metadata, author metadata, two chapters, a data-URI PNG from the Markdown source, a table, and a footnote.
Output
5,283 byte HTML with our document engine generator metadata, author meta tag, embedded default CSS, chapter ids, figure markup, and table markup.

Feedback Atlas web proof

Input
Report EPUB with table values ARR $4.1M and $4.9M, nested sections, bold percentage text, and no embedded image.
Output
4,729 byte HTML titled sample; the table became a web table and EPUB package files were collapsed into one document.

A real EPUB → HTML run

We converted our EPUB sample (5 KB) with Document engine on 2026-09-11. It took 27 ms and produced a 5 KB HTML file, about the same size as the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Options and when to change them

toc
Set this when reviewers need a generated contents block in the HTML rather than relying only on headings.

Do it yourself

Pandoc

bash
pandoc in.epub -t html -o out.html --standalone --toc

Standalone HTML is easier to send for review, but extracted media paths must travel with the file if images are external.

EPUB to HTML by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Document engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=epub&to=html.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.epub" -F "from=epub" -F "to=html" \
  --output output.html

When this is the wrong conversion

  • Use /convert/epub-to-md if the output will be edited as source text rather than reviewed in a browser.
  • Use /convert/epub-to-txt when search indexing needs only prose and not HTML markup.
  • Use /convert/epub-to-docx for line edits from nontechnical reviewers.

EPUB to HTML questions

Is EPUB to HTML a zip extraction?

No. The app routes this pair to our document engine, which reads the EPUB and writes a new standalone HTML document instead of simply unpacking the archive.

Why does the HTML say it was generated by our document engine?

Our document engine includes a generator meta tag in the HTML head. We saw that tag in both rich and sample EPUB conversions.

Does the original EPUB table of contents remain?

Not as nav.xhtml or toc.ncx files. Our document engine can generate an HTML contents block with the toc option, but the EPUB package navigation is gone.
