From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • One image per page Kept

A two-page report came back as two PNGs in one ZIP, numbered in page order; a single-page Pages 14.5 document came back as one PNG with no archive.

  • Pixel size Changed

At the default 144 DPI an A4 page is 1191 × 1684 pixels and a Letter page 1224 × 1584. Raise dpi for print or set width for a fixed slot on a web page.

  • Layout Changed

The image shows the page as our office engine laid it out, so a photo that lost its text wrap or a substitute font that moved a line break is baked into the picture.

  • Empty trailing pages Changed

When the layout adds an empty last page, it becomes an image too: the iPad handout produced a second, plain white PNG of 8,267 bytes.

  • Text Changed

Words turn into pixels, so they cannot be searched, copied or read aloud by a screen reader; repeat key details in the message that carries the image.

  • Colours and photos Kept

The handout's yellow title and both photographs look the same in the PNG as in the PDF step.

A real Apple Pages → PNG run

We converted our Apple Pages sample (232 KB) with Office engine → Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 1.5 s and produced a 253 KB PNG file, about the same size as the input. The engine raised 2 warnings, listed below.

  • Mac fonts are replaced with substitutes; text no longer wraps around pictures, table borders are dropped and an automatic table of contents comes out blank.
  • PDF pages rendered as images; selectable text is not preserved.

Options and when to change them

dpi
Use 300 when the image will be printed or zoomed; 144 is enough for screens.
max_pages
Set 1 to get only the first page, for example a cover sheet or a flyer front.
width
Give the pixel width of the space the image will fill; the height follows the page shape.

Do it yourself

LibreOffice and pdftoppm

bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf handout.pages && pdftoppm -png -r 144 handout.pdf page

Going through PDF gives every page; asking soffice for PNG directly writes only the first one.

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If people need to copy text or click links, send Pages → PDF instead.
  • If the page is mostly photographs and file size matters, Pages → JPG is usually smaller.
  • If the document runs to many pages, a PDF is easier to page through than a ZIP of images.

Apple Pages to PNG questions

Why did I get a blank extra image?

In one of our test documents the layout added an empty page after the real content, and that page is rendered like any other. Delete the extra image, or set max_pages to the number of pages you expect.

Can I get just the first page as a thumbnail?

Set max_pages to 1 and width to the size you need, for example 600. You get one PNG instead of a ZIP.

Is the PNG sharp enough to print?

At 144 DPI it is sharp on screen but soft on paper. Set dpi to 300, or print the PDF version, which keeps text as outlines.
