Pages → DOCX is for when someone has to keep working on a Mac document in Word: text, footnotes and pictures move across, but every paragraph lands in Word's Normal style, so headings need re-tagging.
Converted with Office engine · input deleted within 24 h
Each paragraph in our test documents arrived as ordinary editable Word text, with Czech accents and curly quotes unchanged.
Heading styles
Changed
Pages headings come across as bold text in Word's Normal style, so the Navigation pane is empty and Word cannot build a contents list from them until you apply Heading 1 and Heading 2.
Footnotes, headers and footers
Kept
A report's three footnotes became real Word footnotes, and its footer kept a live page-number field rather than typed numbers.
Pictures
Kept
The iPad handout's map and river photo were embedded in the DOCX as JPEGs at their placed size; the map stays anchored above the title, as in the PDF route.
Tables
Changed
A 3 × 4 Pages table became a real Word table with a header row style, but its ruled borders were not carried over.
Fonts
Changed
The file asks for the original names, such as Helvetica Neue, Georgia and Lucida Grande. Word on a Mac usually has them; Word on Windows substitutes, which moves line breaks.
Text boxes and shapes
Changed
A page-layout test file produced seven Word drawing shapes; when we reopened the DOCX the green rectangle and arrow were fine, but a green circle showed as a partial pie shape.
Table of contents
Lost
The automatic contents list in a Pages 13 file was dropped entirely; insert a new one in Word after styling the headings.

△Mac fonts are replaced with substitutes; text no longer wraps around pictures, table borders are dropped and an automatic table of contents comes out blank.
△Headings arrive as Normal paragraphs; apply Heading styles in Word to get navigation and a new table of contents.
Options and when to change them
filter
Leave it unset to get a Word 2007–365 file. Override it only when a script needs a specific Word export filter.
Do it yourself
LibreOffice
bash
soffice --headless --convert-to docx --outdir out report.pages
Same import as ours, so plan the same clean-up: apply Heading styles in Word, then insert a fresh table of contents.
Pages (Mac, iPhone, iPad or iCloud.com)
bash
File → Export To → Word (iCloud.com: Download a Copy → Word)
Made by the app that wrote the file, so it is the better route whenever someone can reach a Mac or iCloud.com.
Apple Pages to Word DOCX by API or MCP
The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=pages&to=docx.
If you only need to read, print or sign the document, Pages → PDF keeps the layout closer to what the author saw.
If the document is a designed page such as a poster or flyer, the Word copy becomes a stack of floating shapes; use PDF or PNG.
If the file is password-protected, remove the password in Pages first; locked files cannot be read.
Apple Pages to Word DOCX questions
Will my headings show up in Word's Navigation pane?
Not until you restyle them. The conversion brings headings over as bold Normal paragraphs, so select each one and apply Heading 1 or Heading 2; after that the Navigation pane and References → Table of Contents work.
Will Word show the same fonts as my Mac?
The DOCX names the fonts the Pages document used. Word for Mac generally finds Helvetica Neue and Georgia; Word for Windows replaces Apple-only faces, so paragraphs can reflow and the page count can change.
Can I convert a Pages file that has a password?
No. The password encrypts the contents, so there is nothing to convert until it is removed. In Pages, turn the password off, save, and upload that copy.
