From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Readable RTF text Kept

The generated RTF converted to editable DOCX paragraphs with the memo text intact.

  • Paragraph styles Changed

The generated RTF output used mostly Normal paragraph styles instead of preserving Word heading style names.

  • Tables Kept

The rich RTF table appeared as Word table markup with the Field, Before, and After cells present.

  • Footnotes Kept

The converted DOCX included footnotes.xml with the reviewer note from the generated RTF.

  • Images Kept

The generated RTF's image was written to word/media/image1.png in the DOCX package.

  • Lists Changed

List markers stayed visible, but the Word numbering model was regenerated during conversion.

  • Bad fixture markup Changed

The sample RTF became a DOCX whose body text included literal \trowd, \cell, and \pard control words.

Generated RTF to Word

Input
1.9 KB RTF generated from the rich DOCX with headings, numbered items, a table, footnote text, and an image.

The 6.3 KB DOCX contained the memo text, table markup, footnotes.xml, and word/media/image1.png, but paragraph styles were mostly Normal.

Control-word fixture

Input
Repository sample.rtf with Feedback Atlas content encoded in RTF syntax that our office engine did not interpret as formatting.
Output
The 4.8 KB DOCX had no Word table objects and its text contained RTF commands such as \pard and \trowd.

Rich Text Format to Word DOCX by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=rtf&to=docx.

curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If you only need a stable read-only file, /convert/rtf-to-pdf avoids later Word reflow.
  • If raw RTF commands appear in the output, repair the RTF before converting to DOCX again.
  • If the source was originally DOCX, use the original file instead of round-tripping through RTF.

Rich Text Format to Word DOCX questions

Will RTF to DOCX restore Word heading styles?

Not reliably. The rich RTF kept visible headings, but the resulting DOCX used mostly Normal style references.

Can RTF tables become Word tables?

Yes when our office engine parses the RTF table syntax. The generated sample produced Word table markup, while the bad fixture remained literal control text.

Does RTF to DOCX keep images?

It can. The generated RTF moved its embedded PNG into the DOCX media folder and kept the drawing in the document body.
