Works manuscript
- Input
- 64,000-byte Microsoft Works 6–9 document: the opening chapters of a novel, set in Times New Roman with italic emphasis.
- Output
- 18,746-byte DOCX in 1.1 s with all 4,973 words and every italic span.
WPS → DOCX handles both kinds of .wps file: Microsoft Works word-processor documents and WPS Office Writer files, which are Word documents under a different extension.
From real runs
| Element | Result | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Text and character formatting | Kept | A 9-page Works manuscript kept all 4,973 words with its italics, and a recipe kept its underlined headings with no stray strikethrough, a fault older importers added to every line. |
| Pictures | Kept | A Works clip-art elephant became a 24 KB WMF picture inside the DOCX, so it stays sharp when resized. |
| WPS Office tables and numbering | Kept | A Chinese procurement document from WPS Office came out with its 7 tables, numbered requirement lists and page headers and footers. |
| Chinese font names | Kept | The WPS Office file kept its font names (宋体, 仿宋_GB2312, 黑体), so a computer with those fonts shows the text in the intended typefaces. |
| Works fonts | Changed | Works documents mostly use Times New Roman and Arial; the DOCX keeps those names, and Word uses them directly. |
| DOS Works character sets | Changed | A Works 2 for DOS code-page test file in Cyrillic converted almost entirely correctly, but one capital letter (К) was dropped. German umlauts in another DOS Works file were all correct. |
| Paragraph styles | Changed | Works has no named heading styles, so every paragraph arrives as Normal with direct formatting; apply Word heading styles if you want a table of contents. |

We converted our Works / WPS Office document sample (10 KB) with Office engine on 2026-10-20. It took 2.8 s and produced a 5 KB Word DOCX file, 53% smaller than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.
Input · sample.wps · 10 KB

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=wps&to=docx.

--output output.docxYou do not need to. A Microsoft Works file and a WPS Office file share the extension but not the inside, and we detect which one it is before converting. As a rule of thumb, Works files date from before 2010, when Works was discontinued, and WPS Office still saves .wps today.
Word has no built-in reader for Microsoft Works documents, and the separate Works converter Microsoft once offered is no longer available. WPS Office files are Word 97 documents inside, but Word does not expect that from a .wps name.
Yes. Files from Works for DOS, Works 3 and 4 for Windows, Works 2000 and Works 6 to 9 all converted in our tests. A .wps file that turns out to be plain text is refused with a note to rename it .txt.
