WPD → DOCX turns an old WordPerfect file into something Word can edit again, and most of the work survives: body text, tables, footnotes and page-number footers come across as real Word objects.
Converted with Office engine · input deleted within 24 h
A WordPerfect 5.1 book note in Polish kept every ą, ę, ł and ż, and a Dutch hydrology chapter kept words like coëfficiënt and Pézenas, as editable Word paragraphs.
Tables
Kept
A 2002 EPA site-assessment form came out with 20 Word tables, with bold-italic row labels and the answers sitting in the cells next to them.
Footnotes, headers and footers
Kept
Footnotes became Word footnotes with automatic numbers, and the page-number footer on the EPA form stayed a live page field.
Equations
Lost
WordPerfect Equation Editor boxes are dropped. In the Dutch chapter five display formulas left blank gaps after lines ending in a colon, so the text refers to formulas that are not there.
Redline and strikeout
Changed
In a WordPerfect 5.1 test clause, redlined words came out as red text (#FF3333) and struck-out words as strikethrough formatting. Neither is a Word tracked change, so Accept All Changes has nothing to accept.
Paragraph styles
Changed
Headings look right but are applied as direct formatting on Normal paragraphs, so Word's navigation pane and automatic table of contents do not see them.
Hyperlinks and bookmarks
Lost
Links in a WordPerfect test document arrived as blue underlined text that no longer clicks, and the bookmarks they pointed to were gone.
WordPerfect graphics
Changed
Clip-art in WordPerfect's WPG format is stored in the DOCX as large EMF pictures: two images took 13 MB unpacked, and when we reopened the file they were scrambled. Photos and scanned figures were fine.
Fonts
Changed
Files from WordPerfect 5.x for Windows name fonts like 'Arial (TT)'. The DOCX keeps that name, so Word shows an unknown font and substitutes; select all and set the font once.

Sample conversions
EPA removal assessment form
Input
31,331-byte WordPerfect 6-family file from a 2002 EPA site record: a nine-page form built from bordered tables, with a page-number footer.
Output
16,944-byte DOCX in 1.3 s with 20 tables and the footer intact. Reopened, it paginated to the same nine pages as the direct PDF.
Hydrology report chapter with equations
Input
1,099,409-byte WordPerfect 6.1 chapter in Dutch with tables, a footnote, two figures and inline and display formulas.
Output
124,681-byte DOCX in 14.1 s. Tables, the footnote and both figures came through; all five display equations were missing, leaving empty lines where they had been.
Amended clause with redline
Input
Constructed WordPerfect 5.1 file: a lease clause with the new wording redlined and the old wording struck out, plus bold, italic, double underline, small caps, sub- and superscript.
Output
4,775-byte DOCX in 1.7 s. Every text attribute survived as formatting; the redline is plain red text rather than an insertion mark.
A real WordPerfect → Word DOCX run
We converted our WordPerfect sample (31 KB) with Office engine on 2026-10-20. It took 7.0 s and produced a 17 KB Word DOCX file, 46% smaller than the input. The engine raised 3 warnings, listed below.

△Fonts that are not installed on our servers are replaced with substitutes, so lines can wrap differently.
△WordPerfect equations are not converted and leave a gap.
△Redline and strikeout become red and struck-through text, not tracked changes.
Options and when to change them
filter
Leave it unset; the DOCX writer is chosen for you. Override only if a script needs a specific Word export filter name.
Do it yourself
LibreOffice
bash
soffice --headless --convert-to "docx:MS Word 2007 XML" --outdir out brief.wpd
Needs the WordPerfect import library, which the Debian and Ubuntu LibreOffice packages and the Windows installer include. A password-protected file fails to load, with no password prompt in headless mode.
WordPerfect Office
bash
File → Save As → File type: MS Word 2007/2010/2013 (*.docx)
WordPerfect reads its own equations and redline, so if a copy is still installed, export the handful of documents that depend on them from there and compare one result before trusting a batch.
WordPerfect to Word DOCX by API or MCP
The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=wpd&to=docx.
If you only need to read, print or file the document, WPD → PDF keeps the page layout and is harder to alter by accident.
If the file is a technical report full of formulas, any converter without WordPerfect itself will lose them; export from WordPerfect or retype the formulas in Word's equation editor.
If the redline marks are the point of the document, keep a PDF of the WordPerfect version alongside the DOCX, because the converted copy no longer tells Word which text was added.
WordPerfect to Word DOCX questions
Can Word open a .wpd file directly?
Word only opens some .wpd files, depending on the WordPerfect version that saved them and on which converters are installed. Converting to DOCX first gives Word a file it always reads, with no add-ins.
What happens to WordPerfect's Reveal Codes?
There are no codes in a DOCX. Bold, italic, small caps, indents, tabs and hard page breaks become Word formatting; codes with no Word equivalent, such as equation boxes and pleading-paper line numbering, are dropped.
My pleading came out without the numbered lines down the left margin. Why?
WordPerfect draws the numbered rule as a page border or watermark, which is not read on import; a pleading-paper file we tested came out with nothing on the page. Apply your court's pleading template in Word after converting.
The converter says my WordPerfect file is password-protected. What now?
Open it in WordPerfect with the password, remove the password, save, and convert the new copy. We do not try to guess or break passwords.
