TIFF to Word DOCX converter

TIFF to DOCX now succeeds by decoding the TIFF to PNG before OCR, then wrapping the transcript as an editable Word document.

What you get — and what changes

  • TIFF preprocessing Changed

The app-generated TIFF was decoded to PNG before Deep Read, replacing the direct TIFF model call that had failed.

  • Word text Kept

The DOCX contained editable release-note text, including the heading, paragraph, three bullets, owner, due date, and status.

  • Multipage scans Lost

The imaging decode path selects the first TIFF frame for OCR, so additional pages in a TIFF packet are not represented.

  • Heading and list formatting Changed

The heading and bullets became Word document structure through our document engine rather than a replica of the image layout.

  • ICC and alpha Lost

The tested TIFF had no ICC profile and no alpha, and the DOCX carried no raster color-management information.

  • Callout layout Changed

The owner/date/status strip was transcribed, but the labels appeared adjacent when the DOCX XML was extracted to text.

  • Runtime Kept

The TIFF-to-DOCX conversion returned a 10.7 KB Word file in 4.5 seconds and used one Deep Read credit.

Sample conversions

Deflate TIFF screenshot

Input
59 KB TIFF produced by the app from the release-note PNG, with 1400 by 1000 pixels, RGB color, and no alpha channel.
Output
DOCX text matched the PNG-derived OCR wording. The page image and colored callout were not embedded in the Word file.

TIFF callout converted to Word

Input
Same TIFF region containing owner, due date, and draft status laid out side by side in a tinted box.
Output
The labels were captured, but the extracted Word text had 'Owner: AP AutomationDue: 2026-09-30Status: draft' without spacing.

A real TIFF → Word DOCX run

We converted our TIFF sample (197 KB) with AI Deep Read under AI Deep Read on 2026-09-11. It took 4.0 s and produced a 11 KB Word DOCX file, 94% smaller than the input. The engine raised 1 warning, listed below.

Is your file a scan?

TIFF-to-DOCX decodes the first TIFF frame to PNG, spends 1 Deep Read credit on that image, and converts the OCR transcript to Word. Review multipage faxes, profile-dependent scans, and label strips because later frames and raster metadata are not retained.

Options and when to change them

preserveLayout
Enable this when an archival TIFF scan has forms or side-by-side labels that should influence Word grouping.
extractTablesAsGfm
Keep it enabled for tabular TIFF scans so detected pipe tables can become Word tables.
languageHint
Use this when TIFF scan text is in a known language or contains short OCR-sensitive field labels.

Do it yourself

Tesseract + Pandoc

bash
tesseract scan.tiff stdout --psm 6 > scan.txt
pandoc scan.txt -o scan.docx

The verified local command produced a DOCX, but it did not recover Word layout and may need TIFF page splitting first.

TIFF to Word DOCX by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (AI Deep Read); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=tiff&to=docx.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.tif" -F "from=tiff" -F "to=docx" \
  -F "deepRead=true" \
  --output output.docx

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If your TIFF contains multiple scanned pages, split the frames before using /convert/tiff-to-docx.
  • If the goal is archival image access, use /convert/tiff-to-png rather than converting pixels into Word text.
  • If the TIFF is a receipt or ledger, extract to a spreadsheet workflow before relying on a Word table.

TIFF to Word DOCX questions

Does TIFF to DOCX read every page in a multipage TIFF?

No. The current image decoder uses the first frame for the Deep Read image. Split multipage TIFF scans into separate page files before making Word documents.

Why did my TIFF start working after the fix?

The previous failure happened when TIFF bytes reached the model directly. The app now asks the imaging sidecar to decode TIFF to PNG before the OCR request.

Will TIFF profiles and alpha channels become Word content?

No. The tested TIFF had no profile or alpha, and the DOCX kept only reconstructed text. Preserve the TIFF if image metadata is part of the record.
