Microsoft Visio to PNG converter

VSDX → PNG renders each Visio page as a crisp image with white paper behind it, which is what Confluence, Jira and slide decks want when nobody else has Visio.

What you get — and what changes

  • One image per page Kept

The 13-page process document came back as a ZIP of 13 PNGs named page-1 to page-13; a single-page architecture map came back as one PNG with no archive.

  • Pixel size Changed

Pages render at 144 DPI: a 21.5 × 16.5 inch architecture map became 3096 × 2376 pixels and an A4 portrait page 1191 × 1684. Use width when a wiki column needs a fixed size.

  • Line work and connectors Kept

Thin connector lines and arrowheads stay sharp because PNG is lossless; the routed lines between ring diagrams were still one pixel clean at 144 DPI.

  • Labels Changed

Shape text becomes pixels in the substitute font. Nobody can search or copy a server name out of the image, so keep the PDF for reference copies.

  • Mixed page sizes Kept

In the four-page plan the A4 cover rendered at 1191 × 1684 pixels and the large planning sheet at its own, far larger size; small pages are not padded out to the big one.

  • Theme-only shapes Lost

Shapes that are missing in the PDF step are missing from the image too; the PNG is a picture of the converted page, not of what Visio shows.

  • Background Changed

Every page is opaque white. A Visio page with no fill does not become a transparent PNG.

Sample conversions

13-page process document

Input
357,987-byte .vsdx: a change log, flowcharts with decision diamonds and coloured sub-process shapes, one wide landscape page.
Output
635,689-byte ZIP of 13 PNGs; 3.6 s in our office engine plus 6.5 s to render the pages.

Architecture map on one page

Input
147,994-byte .vsdx, a 21.5 × 16.5 inch page of nested rings with server icons and labels.
Output
One 3096 × 2376 PNG of 479,530 bytes, no ZIP, in about 4 s end to end.

A real Microsoft Visio → PNG run

We converted our Microsoft Visio sample (233 KB) with Office engine → Image engine on 2026-10-20. It took 3.9 s and produced a 180 KB PNG file, 23% smaller than the input. The engine raised 3 warnings, listed below.

Input · sample.vsdx · 233 KB

Output · sample.zip · 180 KB

  • Gradients become flat colours, hyperlinks are not kept, and shapes styled only by a Visio theme can be missing; compare page by page.
  • PDF pages rendered as images; selectable text is not preserved.
  • 4 pages written as one PNG each inside a ZIP.

Options and when to change them

dpi
Drop to 96 for a quick preview of a very large sheet; raise to 300 when the image will be printed or zoomed into.
max_pages
Set it to 1 when you only need the first tab, for example a cover diagram for a ticket.
width
Give a pixel width such as 1600 for a wiki or slide; the height follows each page's own proportions.

Do it yourself

LibreOffice and pdftoppm

bash
soffice --headless --convert-to pdf diagram.vsdx && pdftoppm -png -r 144 diagram.pdf page

Asking soffice for png directly writes only the first page at 96 DPI. Going through PDF gives every page.

Microsoft Visio to PNG by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Office engine → Image engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=vsdx&to=png.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \

  -F "file=@input.vsdx" -F "from=vsdx" -F "to=png" \
  -F 'options={"width":0}' \

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If the reader needs to search the labels or print the drawing large, VSDX → PDF keeps text and lines as vectors.
  • If the image should scale without blurring in a web page, VSDX → SVG keeps the lines as paths.

Microsoft Visio to PNG questions

How do I put a Visio diagram into Confluence or Jira?

Neither renders .vsdx attachments inline without a plugin. Convert to PNG, set width to the column width you use, and attach the image; keep the .vsdx next to it for whoever edits the diagram later.

Why did I get a ZIP instead of a PNG?

Your drawing has more than one page and each page is a separate image. The ZIP keeps them in tab order; use max_pages 1 if you only want the first page.

My Visio page is huge. Will the PNG be too big?

Large sheets give large images: a 32 × 22.8 inch planning page renders at roughly 4600 × 3300 pixels at 144 DPI. Set width to cap it, or lower dpi.
