How to send EPUB to Kindle

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB as an input format. The service then converts the book for Kindle delivery. This is different from saying every Kindle device is a general EPUB reader; Amazon handles the conversion before or during delivery.

MOBI and AZW are no longer accepted for Send to Kindle. If you have old MOBI files, they may still exist in your library or work through older side-loading routes, but they are not the right format to upload to Send to Kindle now.

The common paths are the Send to Kindle web page, desktop app, mobile share sheet, and Kindle email address. The best choice depends on file size, account setup, and whether you are on a phone or desktop.

If using email, send from an approved email address and attach the EPUB. If using the web page or app, confirm you are signed into the same Amazon account as the target Kindle. A successful upload can still take time to appear in the device library.

Check that the file is DRM-free. Calibre can open and convert many DRM-free EPUB files, but it cannot convert DRM-protected books. If Calibre cannot read the book because of DRM, Send to Kindle will not make that a general-purpose conversion.

Validate the basic structure by opening the EPUB in an ebook reader before sending. Broken manifests, missing cover images, or malformed XHTML can cause Amazon conversion errors. If needed, regenerate a clean EPUB from the source document.

If your source is DOCX or Markdown, create EPUB before sending. Pandoc can write EPUB from structured documents, and Calibre can convert many ebook formats. A typical Calibre command is ebook-convert book.azw3 book.epub for DRM-free inputs.

For PDF, consider whether EPUB is appropriate. A fixed-layout PDF of a scanned page may convert poorly to reflowable ebook text. If the PDF is a scan, OCR and structural cleanup are needed before EPUB is useful on a small e-reader.

After delivery, open the book on the actual Kindle or Kindle app. Check table of contents, cover, chapter breaks, footnotes, images, and special characters. A desktop EPUB reader is not enough because Amazon’s conversion can change styling.

If layout is poor, fix the EPUB source rather than repeatedly sending the same file. Simplify CSS, repair headings, embed images correctly, and remove unsupported scripts or interactive content.

Metadata affects the library experience. Title, author, cover image, and language are stored inside the EPUB package, and Amazon may use them when listing the document. If a file appears under the wrong title, fix EPUB metadata before resending.

Keep expectations different for personal documents and store books. Send to Kindle is a document delivery service, not a guarantee that the result will match a professionally produced Kindle edition with publisher QA, enhanced navigation, and device-specific tuning.

If a book is important, send one chapter-length test file first. Check headings, images, footnotes, and special characters before sending the complete manuscript. A small failed upload is easier to diagnose than a full book with many possible causes.

A final sending checklist should include account, approved sender, title metadata, cover, and sample rendering. Most confusing Kindle failures are account or metadata problems rather than EPUB syntax problems.
