About FictionBook FB2
FB2, or FictionBook 2, is an XML ebook format built around book structure rather than device-specific page layout. An FB2 file describes metadata, authors, titles, genres, annotations, body sections, poems, citations, footnotes, and binary image payloads encoded inside XML. It does not package CSS-heavy web content like EPUB, and it does not fix pages like PDF. Our routes can convert FB2 to XML, HTML, Markdown, TXT, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, PDF, and DOCX, and can create FB2 from HTML, Markdown, or plain text through enabled ebook paths. FB2 is therefore useful as a structured source for fiction and text-heavy books.
The format's practical version is FictionBook 2.x XML with a schema-backed vocabulary. Because it is XML, well-formedness, declared encoding, namespaces, and valid element nesting matter. Metadata is first-class, including author names, language, source identifiers, sequence information, and document history. Images are often base64-encoded in binary elements and referenced from the text. Styling is intentionally modest compared with EPUB CSS. That restraint helps preserve reading order, but it means conversion to richer targets must invent presentation, while conversion from styled formats must discard many design choices and page habits from publishers.
Readers and writers include FBReader, CoolReader, Calibre, library archives, Eastern European ebook collections, conversion utilities, and author workflows that prefer structured XML. Many mainstream ebook stores prefer EPUB, so FB2 often serves as an archive or source format rather than the final delivery file. Because content is plain XML, developers can inspect and repair it with ordinary text tools, but casual editors can also break nesting or encoding. A clean FB2 should have complete metadata, clear section hierarchy, linked notes, and image references that resolve inside the same file package.
FB2 conversion gotchas are structural rather than visual. FB2 to EPUB adds package files, CSS, and navigation around the XML content, so cover and metadata mapping should be checked. FB2 to MOBI or AZW3 adapts the book for Kindle workflows with the usual legacy limits. FB2 to PDF creates pages from reflowable sections. FB2 to Markdown or TXT extracts readable text but loses much of the semantic XML. Before conversion, validate the XML, confirm language and author fields, check images and notes, and inspect a chapter with poems or citations because those elements are easy to flatten poorly.
Common FictionBook FB2 problems
An FB2 book needs to work in EPUB readers.
Use /convert/fb2-to-epub, then check metadata, cover display, footnotes, and chapter navigation.
A Kindle library needs an FB2 title.
Use /convert/fb2-to-azw3 for newer Kindle styling or /convert/fb2-to-mobi for older devices.
The XML must be inspected or repaired directly.
Use /convert/fb2-to-xml and validate well-formedness before converting to another ebook target.
A reviewer asks for a printable proof.
Use /convert/fb2-to-pdf, then inspect page breaks around titles, poems, images, and notes.
Only plain text is needed for indexing.
Use /convert/fb2-to-txt, accepting that metadata, image links, and detailed section semantics are simplified.
