From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Document title Kept

The HTML title appeared as the first plain text line before the body paragraph.

  • Paragraph text Changed

Strong and emphasis tags were flattened, but their words stayed in the paragraph.

  • Entities Changed

The   entity was decoded into spacing in the output rather than preserved as HTML syntax.

  • Nested lists Changed

The unordered list and nested ordered list became indented plain text list markers.

  • HTML tables Changed

The two-column table became an aligned plain text table with header and separator rows.

  • CSS-hidden text Kept

Text inside class hidden appeared in the TXT because our document engine read source HTML and did not evaluate CSS display rules.

  • Scripts Lost

The script element and document.write payload were not included in the plain text output.

  • CSS rules Lost

The style block was removed completely, so class names and visual display decisions did not carry into TXT.

Sample conversions

HTML page with hidden source text

Input
HTML document with title, paragraph, strong and em tags,  , nested ul/ol lists, a two-column table, a CSS-hidden paragraph, style block, and script.
Output
207-byte TXT with the title, flattened paragraph, decoded spacing, nested list markers, aligned table text, and CSS-hidden paragraph; the script and CSS rules were absent.

Table extraction from a page

Input
HTML body containing a Name/Qty table with one café row and surrounding paragraph text.
Output
The TXT kept the surrounding text and turned the table into padded text columns. It did not create CSV cells or preserve HTML tags.

A real HTML → Plain text run

We converted our HTML sample (490 B) with Document engine on 2026-09-11. It took 15 ms and produced a 222 B Plain text file, 55% smaller than the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Do it yourself

pandoc

bash
pandoc page.html -f html -t plain -o page.txt

Pandoc reads source structure, not a browser-rendered DOM, so CSS-hidden text can appear in the plain text result.

HTML to Plain text by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Document engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=html&to=txt.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.html" -F "from=html" -F "to=txt" \
  --output output.txt

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If hidden elements must be excluded exactly as a browser would render them, use a browser automation extraction step instead.
  • If tables should become rows and columns for analysis, use a spreadsheet or CSV target rather than TXT.
  • If links, headings, and lists need to stay marked up, use /convert/html-to-md instead of plain text.

HTML to Plain text questions

Does HTML to TXT apply CSS display none?

No. The tested class hidden paragraph appeared in the TXT because our document engine parsed the source document rather than running a browser layout engine.

Are script contents included?

No. The script element and its document.write text were absent from the output, so this is not a JavaScript-rendered page capture.

How are HTML tables represented?

Our document engine writes a readable aligned text table. It is suitable for review, but it is not structured data after conversion.

Will HTML entities stay encoded?

No. Character entities are decoded into text characters or spacing as part of the plain text serialization.
