Plain text to EPUB converter

TXT → EPUB reads the text as lightweight Markdown, so blank lines make paragraphs and dash or bullet lines make lists, but the book has no title unless you give it one.

From real runs

What you get — and what changes

  • Paragraphs Changed

Lines separated by a blank line became paragraphs; consecutive single lines were joined, so ARR, $4.1M and $4.9M ran together into one sentence.

  • Lists Kept

Two lines starting with a bullet character became an unordered list and the lines starting 1. and 2. became an ordered list in the chapter XHTML.

  • Headings Changed

A line followed by a row of dashes was read as a level-2 heading, which turned the words Metric, Q2 and Q3 into a chapter entry named Metric Q2 Q3 in the table of contents.

  • Book title Lost

The first line of the text is not promoted to a title; the EPUB has no dc:title and readers show the file name or UNTITLED.

  • Metadata Changed

Language is set to en-US and the modification date to 1970-01-01; there is no author, cover or identifier beyond a generated UUID.

  • Structure Kept

The output is a valid EPUB 3.0 package with a navigation document, a title page and one chapter file, 5,350 bytes for 440 bytes of text.

  • Encoding Kept

UTF-8 text including the em dash and the middle dot survived; files in other encodings should be converted to UTF-8 first.

Sample conversions

Board update pasted as plain text

Input
sample.txt, 440 bytes: a title line, a Prepared for line, a small text table with a dashed rule, two bullet lines and two numbered lines.
Output
5,350-byte EPUB 3.0 in 99 ms with one chapter; bullets and numbers became lists, the dashed rule turned the line above into a heading, and the book had no title.

Novel manuscript with chapter headings

Input
A long text file where chapters are marked as lines like Chapter One followed by a blank line, with a title and author on the first two lines.
Output
One chapter document with all the text in it: without # markers or dashed underlines nothing becomes a heading, so the table of contents has a single entry.

A real Plain text → EPUB run

We converted our Plain text sample (440 B) with Document engine on 2026-09-11. It took 99 ms and produced a 5 KB EPUB file, 12× larger than the input. The engine raised no warnings.

Options and when to change them

toc
Turn it on when the text uses # headings or dashed underlines and you want a table of contents page inside the book as well as in the reader's menu.
standalone
Always on for EPUB; the setting has no further effect for this pair.

Do it yourself

Pandoc

bash
pandoc in.txt -f markdown -t epub3 --metadata title="My Book" --metadata author="Name" -o out.epub

Pass title and author explicitly; plain text carries no metadata and readers file untitled books badly.

Calibre

bash
ebook-convert in.txt out.epub --title "My Book" --authors "Name" --chapter-mark none

Calibre's txt input has its own heuristics for paragraphs and may insert page breaks on blank lines.

Plain text to EPUB by API or MCP

The HTTP API and the MCP server run the exact engine this page uses (Document engine); the response carries the same warnings the web converter shows. Check support first with GET /api/v1/pairs?from=txt&to=epub.

curl
curl -X POST https://filetypeconverters.com/api/v1/convert \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FTC_API_KEY" \
  -F "file=@input.txt" -F "from=txt" -F "to=epub" \
  --output output.epub

When this is the wrong conversion

  • If the text already has structure you care about, convert it to Markdown first and use MD → EPUB, where headings, emphasis and links are explicit.
  • If the target is a Kindle, MD → EPUB or TXT → EPUB followed by EPUB → AZW3 gives a file the device indexes; raw TXT on Kindle has no chapters.
  • If the file is a data dump or log, an ebook is the wrong container; readers reflow lines and drop alignment.

Plain text to EPUB questions

Why does my EPUB have no title?

Plain text has no metadata field, and the first line is treated as an ordinary paragraph. Add a line starting with % Title at the top, or set the title in a reader app after import.

Why did some lines merge into one paragraph?

Single line breaks are treated as soft wraps and joined, as in Markdown. Leave an empty line between blocks that should stay separate.

How do I get chapters?

Start chapter titles with # or underline them with a row of dashes or equals signs. Each level-1 heading becomes its own chapter file and a table-of-contents entry.

Will bullets and numbered lines become lists?

Yes. Lines starting with a bullet character, a dash or an asterisk become an unordered list, and lines starting with 1. become an ordered list.
